About the Tutor

Lionel Playford MA BA Dip.Man.Stud BSc

Lionel Playford has been a professional artist since 1991. Prior to that he worked as a naval architect and shipbuilder before studying Art & Design and then Fine Art at degree level. He did a Masters degree in Fine Art at Newcastle University in 1997-9

Academic Details

This course has been accredited by Sunderland University at HE Level 1 and offers 0 credit points towards the Award in Continuing Education (ACE). The course forms a module in CLL's Music and Visual Art programme.


Aim of the course:

The aim of this course is to:

a) • to introduce the students to the basic principles of proportioning objects

b) • to explain how to use different shading techniques to give shape to objects

c) • to develop the students’ own personal drawing style

d) • to enhance their awareness of composition, tonal qualities and chiaroscuro.

Syllabus

A typical programme is:

Week Topic

1 AM. SHAPE AND PROPORTION. Introduction and course outline. Draw a portrait. What is a likeness? What is a portrait? What makes for personality/character? Exercise 1-outline shapes only. Exercise 2 –Silhouette with negative space.

Demo - proportions and measured drawing. Exercise 3 –measured drawing. Discussion on drawing and painting materials and equipment.

PM. CONSTRUCTING PARTS OF THE FACE. Visualising 3-D form. Exercise 4 – Nose. Exercise 5 – Ear. Exercise 6 – Eyes. Exercise 7 – modelling whole head.

Starting points for a portrait.

Home work- self portrait drawing. Prepare materials and support for next sessions painting.

2 AM. ONE DAY PORTRAIT PAINTING. Strategy and plan for success. Exploring compositional possibilities. Deciding colours on palette. Deciding what kind of portrait and achievable outcome.

Demo – drawing with paint.

PM. PAINTING CONTD. Review progress, identify weaknesses and plan remedial actions. Plan remainder of time. Colour observation and mixing. The portrait palette. Finish painting.

Homework – draw/paint from photo. Prepare support for 2 day painting project.

3 AM. 2 DAY PAINTING. Plan a portrait painting project for remainder of course. Decide basic idea for portrait and plan your drawing studies and painting composition. Start painting.

PM. CONTINUE PAINTING. Tone, volume and mass. Negative and positive shape. Demonstration of tonal study. Checking proportions and shape.

Homework. Draw/paint a friend.

4 FINISHING. Setting priorities for completing the portrait. Checking proportions and shape. Working with details. The necessity of change.

Group discussion of achievements. Next term. End

Teaching Methods

The learning outcomes of the course will be achieved by the following teaching methods:

Teaching will be a mixture of exercises, demonstrations and individual projects with one to one guidance from the tutor and group discussions of work. Examples from the history of art will be used throughout to illustrate different ideas and approaches to painting and drawing and you will be encouraged to copy from relevant examples as homework practice.

What we will expect you to do

In order to earn credit for this course students must:

Students will be asked to set goals for particular drawings and paintings. The tutor will analyse with the student the practical route followed by the student in achieving the goals. Painting the drawing will be presented as problem setting and solving. Assessment will be based on the quality of the decisions made by the student as well as the feeling displayed in the mark making. Assessment will be continuous, oral and qualitative.
